Protesters say ICE presence in Oakland is keeping immigrants from social services - Oakland North
Activists gathered t the Eastmont Town Center in Oakland on Sunday to demand that ICE not be allowed into the social services center. Protesters gathered at the Eastmont Town Center in Oakland, California, on Sunday to demand that the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) not be allowed into the social services center or any healthcare facility. They argue that this has made people less likely to seek help there. The demonstration was led by Gabriela Galicia, executive director of the Street Level Health Project in Oakland. The protest was prompted by warnings that ICE officers may be using an Eastmont parking lot to transfer detainees. Similar concerns have been raised about Highland Hospital in Oakland where a man was taken there with fractured ribs after allegedly being tackled and by ICE agents seeking to detain him in Emeryville. The Alameda Health System, which oversees Highland Hospital, said it has protocols in place to respond to ICE presence at its facilities and that it reinforces those through staff training and exercises.
