A New Takeout Window in Oakland Sells Killer French Dip Sandwiches Until 2 a.m.
Town Beef’s ‘Oakland-style’ take on the classic won’t stay under the radar for long. The Midnight Diners is a weekly collaboration between KQED food editor Luke Tsai and graphic novelist Thien Pham. The pair visited Town Beef, a new takeout window in North Oakland that sells hot French dip sandwiches until 2 a.m. The restaurant serves a unique “Oakland-style” take on the sandwich, with chef-owner Craig Smith using ribeye steak instead of traditional cuts of roast beef or prime rib. The house special includes a vegan mushroom version of the sandwich and an electrolyte drink. Despite the lack of customers, the restaurant's service was generally quiet and pleasant.
