Legionella bacteria identified at Oakland County courthouse

Legionella bacteria, which causes a type of pneumonia called Legionnaires' disease, was found in water from four sites at the Pontiac courthouse. The Oakland County courthouse in Pontiac has identified water samples from four of 11 sites tested for Legionella bacteria, which can cause a serious form of pneumonia called Legionnaires' disease. The county is taking immediate action to install filters on fixtures in the same water loop as the building. The water system will be flushed and additional remediation measures will be taken. The test results were obtained from samples taken from men’s bathrooms on the first and third floors and two sinks in the cafeteria. No court employee has reported symptoms consistent with Legionnaires’ disease, but a custodian working in the Oakland County Sheriff’’s administration building contracted Legionnaires in November. The disease can vary in severity and can have a fatality rate of about 10%.
