Officials Have A New Plan To Tackle Winter Flooding In Marin County

A partnership is putting a local reservoir at the center of an effort to protect flood-prone communities. Officials in Marin County have announced a new plan to combat winter flooding in the area. Pumping is set to begin on Monday and could continue into mid-November depending on weather conditions and water quality. The plan builds on a 2021 storm when the lower water level at Phoenix Lake provided room to capture runoff from the lake that otherwise would have flowed into Ross Creek and Corte Madera Creek. Officials hope that lowering the reservoir ahead of this winter could provide similar storage capacity, though the benefits depend on the timing and intensity of storms and the lake's water level when rain arrives. Marin Water will retain control of reservoir operations, including how far to lower the lake and when to stop pumping. The project is part of broader winter preparations and will not eliminate the risk of flooding in San Anselmo or Ross.
