More than 50 vehicles stuffed with unwanted bulky items came to dispose of their waste at Oakland’s second Bulky Block Party of the year. Oakland's second Bulky Block Party of the Year attracted hundreds of people to dispose of unwanted furniture, appliances, construction materials and mattresses. The event is part of Oakland Public Works Department's efforts to combat illegal dumping, a public health and safety crisis that leaves streets littered with debris. The city's three-year illegal dumping strategy aims a 20% increase in residents' use of free bulky-waste disposal services in highly dumped neighborhoods. The Bulky block Party was first launched in 2018, but paused in 2024 due to budget constraints and staffing limitations. A total of 385 residents participated and collected over 30 tons of bulky waste. Public Works operations Manager John Hillmon said the event aims to raise awareness of these services and will return in the future.
