Trial is underway in Oakland County for a man accused in the 2018 murder of another who was shot and thrown in a Pontiac lake.

Angel Jose Alvarez, 24, is charged with open murder and possession of a firearm in the commission of a felony in connection with the death of Emilio Valdez, 20. Valdez’s body was found in Osmun Lake in Pontiac on June 7, 2018, but it was four years before Alvarez was charged.

Investigators determined Valdez was shot twice and was still alive when he was put into the lake.

Valdez was a 2016 graduate of Warren Mott High School who had moved from Macomb County to Pontiac. As stated in his obituary, he was one of nine siblings and the son of Pamela Valdez and the late Ramiro Valdez II.

Also charged in 2022 in connection with the homicide was Alvarez’s mother, Guadalupe Davila-Rodriguez of Pontiac, and her other son, Juan Diego Hernandez of Center Line. They each face a charge of lying to a police officer — amended from an original charge of accessory after the fact to a felony — and are scheduled for a July 16 trial before O’Brien.

According to a court filing, it’s alleged that that car Alvarez used in the homicide was the same one Davila-Rodriguez reported stolen.

While bond was denied for Alvarez, Hernandez and Davila-Rodriguez are out of jail on personal bond, which doesn’t require any cash or surety to be posted.
