Elephant Rumblings: Sears drawing trade interest?

MLB news roundup The Oakland Athletics are reportedly receiving interest from other teams. Left-hander JP Sears has been one of the only consistent starting pitchers on the Athletics pitching staff over the past two years. Despite having four more years of club control remaining before he reaches free agency, Sears could still be with the team when they move to Las Vegas. The Athletics have expressed a desire to be a winner when they relocate to their new stadium and Sears could be a key player in this transition. However, Sears' peripherals are not great and he is not a strikeout artist like Mason Miller. Despite this, Sears is expected to stay with the Athletics during this upcoming trading season.

We learned late yesterday evening that there are teams across baseball who are actually watching the Oakland Athletics, other than reliever Mason Miller. There’s been speculation regarding a bunch of players, from All-Star DH/LF Brent Rooker to lefty slugger Seth Brown to even controllable players like outfielder JJ Bleday and infielder Abraham Toro. Yesterday though we got word of a starting pitcher who’s been asked about from other teams.

Left-hander JP Sears has been one of the only consistencies on the Athletics pitching staff over the past two years. While other starting pitchers have dealt with injury, demotions, or ineffectiveness, the lone constant has been that JP Sears would take the ball every fifth day. It’s been invaluable for a club that has struggled to find arms to soak up innings the way Sears can.

On the other hand, Sears has four more years of club control before the lefty reaches free agency. So theoretically Sears could still be wearing the Green & Gold when the team moves to Las Vegas. The organization has been adamant that they want to be a winner when they move into their new stadium and Sears could be apart of that. The club has already seen tremendous growth from the young arm just two seasons into his major league career and it’s fair to expect that Sears could take an even further step and become an enviable middle-rotation arm.

On the other hand, Sears could probably return a few prospects who could contribute more in the future when the team is actually competitive. The lefty is after all a bit of a late bloomer and will be into his thirties when the club is planning to be competitive. That means the club could try to cash in on Sears sooner than later.

In all likelihood Sears will stick around. His peripherals aren’t great and he’s not a strikeout artist like Mason Miller is out of the bullpen. There is also a ton of value in having at least one stable force in the rotation instead of a constant revolving door. Unless another team absolutely blows the team away with an offer it feels safe-ish to say that Sears will probably stay out during this upcoming trading season.
