Legionella bacteria identified at Oakland County courthouse

Legionella bacteria, which causes a type of pneumonia called Legionnaires' disease, was found in water from four sites at the Pontiac courthouse. The Oakland County courthouse in Pontiac, Michigan, has identified four of 11 water samples tested for legionella bacteria, which can cause a form of pneumonia called Legionnaires' disease. The bacteria can be found in soil and in water systems, such as cooling towers, hot tubs and water tanks, and can cause symptoms such as cough, fever, headache, muscle aches, shortness of breath, confusion, diarrhea and nausea. The county is taking immediate action to install filters on fixtures in the same water loop as the building and will temporarily close fixtures that cannot be immediately serviced. The facility will continue to undergo periodic testing. The positive test results were obtained from samples taken from men’s bathrooms on the first and third floors and two sinks in the cafeteria. The disease, which does not typically spread from person to person, can be caused by inhaling small water droplets from contaminated water systems.
