Damaged fiber-optic and copper lines disrupted police dispatch for hours on Wednesday and Thursday, authorities said. Wire thieves may have disrupted Oakland's 911 emergency response system on Wednesday night, damaging fiber-optic and copper lines, disrupting police dispatch for hours. The outage began shortly after 8:30 p.m. when Oakland police dispatchers noticed their computer-aided dispatch system froze. They tested emergency and nonemergency lines and found that phone service, internet, and the dispatch system were down. The damage also affected the Oakland Fire Department’s 911 system, but fire still responded to medical calls. Police are investigating the damage as a possible criminal act and are following leads. The department has activated its criminal investigators and intelligence units and contacted the FBI about possible assistance.
