An Oakland bar popular among UC Berkeley students and alumni will soon close.

The Graduate announced on its Facebook page it will serve its last drinks at 6202 Claremont Avenue on June 30, sharing no further details on the decision to close. The bar, which is not connected to the Graduate hotel in Berkeley, became beloved by Cal students, who often had post-graduation first drinks over complimentary popcorn following commencement ceremonies.

The Chronicle could not immediately reach the bar’s owners or managers.

SFGATE reports the bar is closing so co-owner Javad Parsa, 86, can retire. (SFGATE and the Chronicle are both owned by Hearst and operate separate newsrooms). He and business partner Najid Mahani bought the Graduate in 1987.

Despite being located roughly 1.5 miles from the campus, the Graduate still lures in students with discounts, a jukebox and a charming, neighborly feel. It is also a hangout for Rockridge residents who sip on pints and martinis.

A sign shared with the closing announcement encourages folks to visit while they can. “Stop by and support (your favorite) bartenders and bar backs,” it reads.
