Oakland 911 system restored Friday morning after outage linked to vandalism, copper wire theft

The Oakland Police Department Friday announced that full 911 service has been restored to it communications center after a copper wire theft and vandalism shut it down Wednesday night. Oakland's 911 service was restored after a major outage in which the computer and phone system was shut down due to copper wire theft and vandalism. The outage left police dispatchers unable to field 911 calls and dispatch officers from the police communications center. The computer dispatching system, known as CAD, was restored Thursday afternoon and phone service to all city systems was restored following night. The city and AT&T crews worked through the night to repair the damaged AT&TT infrastructure. No arrests have been made in connection with the theft and vandalization of the systems. Police Chief of Police James Beere described the incident as a "perfect example of theft leading to something far more severe and serious" that could result in people losing their lives. An investigation is under way, with an investigation into the incident being launched by the FBI.
