These Bay Area restaurants are finalists for a prestigious national food award

Two San Francisco spots were nominated for drink-related awards: The Morris for outstanding wine program and Pacific Cocktail Haven for outstanding bar. The final winners will be announced in Chicago on June 10.

Bay Area restaurants and chefs were nominated Wednesday for James Beard Awards, inching closer to possibly winning what’s considered the equivalent of the Oscars for the food world.
Geoff Davis, chef and owner of acclaimed, 7-month-old Burdell in Oakland, is up for best new chef in California, as are Rogelio Garcia of Auro in Calistoga and Buu “Billy” Ngo of Sacramento Japanese restaurant Kru. Six San Francisco chefs that were named as semifinalists for this award in January did not move forward.
No Bay Area spot is up for best new restaurant, though a Northern California favorite is: Chez Noir in Carmel-by-the-Sea, run by husband-and-wife owners Jonny and Monique Black.
Two San Francisco spots were nominated for drink-related awards: The Morris for outstanding wine program and Pacific Cocktail Haven for outstanding bar.
Last year, only three Bay Area representatives moved ahead to finalists for the prestigious James Beard Awards, and none of them won, sparking national debate about the potential decline of the region’s food scene. This year, just four nominees are from the Bay Area (though six represent Northern California).
The final winners will be announced at a ceremony in Chicago on June 10.
