Quinn’s Lighthouse, a restaurant on the Oakland waterfront, closed in January after 40 years of serving fish and chips and pouring cold pints. But new owners Nathan and Tina Tran have revived the restaurant, keeping fried fish and clam chowder on the menu, along with Vietnamese dishes like garlic noodles, banh mi and plates of grilled shrimp. The new owners are currently working with a limited menu, but plan on expanding once the reborn restaurant is operating at full capacity. The East Bay Times reported the reopening.

Elsie’s in Berkeley opened in March as a tribute to the meals owner Cash Caris ate as a child with his grandmother. The latest from the Delirama founder, at the same location, offers dishes like chicken soups, handmade gnocchi with sweet potato and a “Sunday” roast accompanied by polenta and beans. Pastrami still features on the menu, with a stack of the smoked meat on a house-baked french roll.

Find Vietnamese-style sandwiches and spring rolls at this new restaurant in West Alameda. Mango and Mint’s banh mi lineup includes classic cold cuts with pate, chashu pork, grilled chicken and a vegetarian option. To drink there is Saigon-style iced coffee, sweetened with thick condensed milk, along with fruit smoothies and avocado milkshakes. The restaurant took over the former Left Field Dogs space.

When Ruby Room closed on New Year’s Eve, it seemed to put an end to the popular spot for affordable cocktails and pints. But the bar is back, now under the ownership of Gibtsawit Abraha and Dawit Kidane, who own nearby Ethiopian restaurant Blue Nile. Oaklandside reported the bar reopened in early March, flipping the switch on the red lighting once again.

Pizza and eye-catching pasta under one roof

The new, glam pizza lounge Three One Four opened late March in Berkeley. Named after the initial digits for pi, the new restaurant offers wood-fired sourdough pies such as the “squash it,” with squash blossom and burrata; and the “little spicy” pizza topped with sausage, pepper jam and honey. There is also cacio e pepe tossed in a hefty wheel of imported Pecorino Romano. Three One Four took over the old Lalime’s space, which closed after 35 years in business.

Find coffee drinks and sandwiches at El Jardin de los Suenos, a new cafe on the Richmond Stretch of San Pablo Avenue. The new destination offers plenty of indoor seating and a menu with pastries from Starter Bakery and bagels from Noah’s Bagels, East Bay Nosh reported. Beverages include espresso drinks and fruit smoothies.

Once a buzzing pop-up, Hella Bagels opened its own brick and mortar location in Albany to long lines in March. Find open-faced and stacked sandwiches like classic lox, onion and scallion schmear; avocado with vegetables and smoked white fish. All come on thick, freshly baked bagels with a remarkable chew. Keep an eye on Hella Bagels’ socials for new sandwiches and limited items, which owner Blake Hunter says will come like “sneaker drops.” Beverages include bottled cold brew coffees from Oakland roasters Soul Blends.

A new tenant offering pizza, beer and pool has brought activity back into the former home of Draw Billiard Club. East Bay Nosh reports the Break Room is now open, offering 12 billiards tables, big screens for sports and a patio space. Pizza offerings include a traditional Margherita, a mushroom pie and pesto with zucchini. Other bites include pulled pork sliders, truffle-mushroom risotto and charcuterie boards.

Long-awaited Brix Factory Brewing opened in West Oakland after two years of anticipation. The brewery, from two former brewers at hugely popular Drake’s Brewing Co. in San Leandro, is pouring a selection of slightly offbeat beers from its 12-tap setup. Current offerings include a hybrid blonde ale with fruit, and an amber ale following a 19th century recipe. A recent collaboration with coffee importers Royal Coffee, behind top coffee shop the Crown, brought a smooth coffee stout into the lineup. There is plenty of seating inside and out on the dog-friendly patio.

A Hayward taqueria chain is now cooking at a new central Hayward address. Metro Taquero’s newest location is now open on Huntwood Avenue, with a tried-and-true lineup of tacos that includes carne asada, carnitas and beer-battered fish. Yelp users report the opening menu also includes tortas and vegetarian burritos. Metro Taquero owner Alejandro Gamarra, who brought back the historic Buffalo Bill’s Brewery last year, took over the space formerly occupied by Tacos Uruapan for his latest location.
