A Bay Area man who was vacationing with his family in Hawaii died after falling 120 feet below a waterfall last week, Hawaii officials said in a news release.

A motorcyclist crashed into a light pole and died Monday night in Oakland, police said.

The motorcyclist was traveling north on Seminary Avenue when he attempted to merge lanes and lost control, crashing into a light pole in the center median near Outlook Avenue, according to the Oakland Police Department.

Speeding appeared to be a factor in the crash but it remained unknown whether alcohol or drugs played a role, police said.

Officers who responded to the crash at about 10 p.m. found the victim, an Oakland man in his 50s, laying on the street and bleeding from his head, police said.

Medical personnel provided aid and transported the victim to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Additional details about his identity were not released pending notification of next of kin.
