River otters have been spotted at a ranch in the San Francisco Bay Area for the first time in over a century. The discovery was made by a researcher from the Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District (Midpen). The otters were discovered while Ken Hickman was reviewing a wildlife camera in the Cloverdale Ranch Open Space Preserve. This is the first sighting of these animals on the San Mateo Coast since the 1800s. North American river otters used to live along the California coast, but the fur trade almost wiped them out in the 19th century. They are now more likely to be seen in the northern parts of the area, in the Marin, Alameda and Contra Costa counties.
