Half Moon Bay Marine Flare Collection Tackles Disposal Problem
The collection addressed a major disposal challenge as California lacks facilities equipped to handle expired marine flares. The San Mateo County Harbor District partnered with San Mateos County Environmental Health Services to organize an appointment-only collection of discarded marine flares. California has no permitted facilities for accepting these flares, so the Harbor District funded a contractor to transport them to an approved out-of-state disposal facility. The Division of Boating and Waterways issued a statement about the operation.
