A's Third Base Battle Will Determine Numerous Player's Futures with Franchise

The Athletics will have as many as four options to choose between at third base this spring, but only one of them will be at the hot corner on Opening Day The Oakland Athletics have traded for Jeff McNeil for the 2026 season, leaving third base as the only glaring offensive hole. The team is reportedly looking internally to find a replacement for this position. Max Muncy, Brett Harris, Darell Hernaiz, and Zack Gelof are all considered contenders for the position. Gelof, who has only played 26 games at third in 2022 with the Double-A Midland RockHounds, may need to add some versatility to his defensive mix. Muncy has been injured the past two seasons but has some experience at third base in the big leagues. Geloff's performance in 2024 was the highest strikeout rate in the major leagues.
